Microprose B-17 Flying Fortress Released

I don't even want to talk about it. What's the use... " it needs a bit of work " TTMurphy says in his preview video. Well, that proves to be the understatement of the year ! Believe me, they didn't even bother to make the wheels turn... Sjeeezzz, here we go skidding down the runway ! I don't want to say it but it nearly reminds me of the initial release of a certain flying boat, remember 'The Clipper' ?? ... Sorry to say this completely unnecessary release is almost in the same league. Just no fun whatsoever. 'Early Release' ??..... 'Half Baked Release' would've been the proper phrase. The only good thing is that the dreadful phase-shifting engines sound matches this crippled critter perfectly !

Sjeeezzzz, what a let down...

What did I say?

Sure, Snuffy, but the B-17 belongs to the top of my fav aircraft and i just can't let any release of it go by without having a good look at it myself. With this one i'm done looking. :sour:

He, I'm sort of in the same boat. I'm a bomber pilot and the 17 is the definitive bomber.

I'm currently struggling with B17 The Mighty Eighth Redux. While still hoping for the bloody hundredth.

Wow! I came very close to buying it on JustFlight and thought maybe I should check here. SO glad I did!!! NC

If Micropose has any integrity at all, they will get working on fixes fast.

My take on this is pretty straightforward:
  • If you want an aircraft that works properly now, don't buy the B17G, it's really not ready and will disappoint you. Just wait and see how it turns out before making a decision.
  • If you are the kind of person who likes having input into an admittedly unfinished product, enjoys seeing the potential and wants to support a new dev team, then maybe early access is for you. Personally, I fall into this camp, and have reason to believe this product will come good - although I think the 8-week timescale they've set is rather ambitious!
I think they would have done better doing a closed Beta - since they would avoid some of the negative reviews of a paid early access product and would have still got good feedback to improve the product. Having this plastered all over the front page of the Just Flight website is going to lure people in to an incomplete product, and do more harm than good.

Well said. Although I think the Early Access method can be valuable for both sides (I also fall into the second category), even over a closed beta, I do agree that marketing it on the front page is not the best strategy. Should have red "Not a complete product yet" tape all over it, to make sure the first category you described does not get wrong expectations.

I'd like to try it, but I am bound to see screenshots and videos for now, since I am not on the same continent as my sim pc. I have a gaming laptop here, but also the connection is way to bad for the sim. Will try it when I move back home. I hope it might have a nice startup simulation by then using the primers and inertia starters.

I went and rewatch the AvAngle review to just to see what the WIP B-17G MP was offering to us for $30 plus dollars. There are many, issues I have at the moment. No, rotating wheels, touch down sounds, the MP and, fuel tanks guages, do not appear to be calibrated correctly? The propeller hubs visuals, you can see an empty hole where the propeller should be, instead of a blury spinning propeller hub, the bright red alcad stenciling all over the interior. At the moment it makes for a nice static display. Her comment, "would I buy this early release?" "Well, yes, it's the only B-17G we have." That may be true, but is it a good reason to purchase this airplane from a developer that has no proven track record in MSFS? You'll have to decide for yourself. As far as feedback, all MP has to do is watch a few of the reviews, already up on YouTube, and that should point them in the right direction of the many items that need fixing or talk to their beta testers. I would be happy to support MP and purchase their B-17G, but not in it's current state. I do not mind one bit paying more for quality, ie, the PMDG DC-6, for example, and there are others. It is a pleasure to fly and everything works and I think MP should look to that as an example.

Early access is usually employed to ensure a source of revenue while development is ongoing

Sorry Paul, That is a link to my post 53 of this thread, or at least it would be if one would click the link.

( @Dangerousdave26 is there a reason why selecting the post number for linking doesn't post the actual post instead of the beginning of the topic? )
Works fine for me. This is what i get when i click the link : " Sadly, MP, though "Reborn" is becoming synonymous with "unfinished products".. Post 53 alright.

Back in the day (2016), I did this little video; notice the crew size.
Yeah, rub it in, mate !

Epic video, Ted ! :encouragement:

I actually kinda forgat about the shaking cowlings and instrument panels at certain power setting but certainly NOT about the 3D spinning props side view, excellent sounds and crew comms ! These are a few features of the ultimate super quality of a A2A product. In my FS aircraft development book (of late) this is what every dev should take notice of and atleast try to copy or preferably even try to surpass it. Follow the Leader. A common phrase in military aviation (@ Microprose, buy FSX or P3D and have a look, that's what you should've done in the first place. You then would've probabely refrained from releasing your B-17 at the half-baked state it is in now...)

Understandable. But shouldn't that be "while betatesting is ongoing" ?...

Early access is fine, but of a half-baked product ??.... Where even the wheels are not animated yet, zoomed out a little bit you can see thru the engine nacelles, ball turret and other LOD problems, bulkheads sticking out of the fuselage, the crew is taken from a kindergarten, the sounds are taken from a heavy phase-shifting lawnmower, guns (particular the waist guns) look like peashooters, low quality textures all around inside and out, lots of stuff not working in the cockpit, final approach and landing with full power ( ! ) and so on and so Fort... That's not 'early access' where you can still enjoy the model while you wait for the release of the final product a few weeks later. There simply is no enjoyment to find in flying this MP B-17 in its deplorable 'early access' state. Just a sorry state of affairs that makes you think of the A2A B-17 with pain in your flying heart. This is not 'taking a step back'... This is 'taking a mile back !'.

I bought and like it. Very nice exterior and very interesting complex interior. Will savor the improvements as they come.

Why did I buy now? It's a B-17 a favored plane since I was 10. I wanted this plane soon to enjoy while I can. Not to wait for a better rendition if I'm not around when it does or does not release.

Why support MP? Why not? We're using MS2020 and MS2024 aren't we?
