I received this information in an email today. Frankly, I never would have even thought that mold spores could develop in cake mixes, pancake mixes, etc.
Good info to know!
It was verified as true by "Snopes".
While Snopes claims this to be true to some extent , it also mentions that some exaggeration is present.

A student at HBHS (high school) had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal. His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, dropped him off at school and headed to play tennis. She never takes her cell phone on the court but did this time and her son called to say he was having trouble breathing. She told him to go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to call school and alert the nurse. The nurse called the paramedics and they were there in 3 minutes and worked on the boy all the way to the hospital. He came so close to dying. Evidently, this is more common then I ever knew. Check the expiration dates on packages like pancakes and cake mixes that have yeast which over time develop spores. Apparently, the mold that forms in old mixes can be toxic! Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake mix, brownie mixes, Bisquick, cake & cookie mixes, etc., you have in your home.

i don't have to worry about that kind of thing in our house. nothing ever lasts long enough to go bad in our house. :icon_lol:
 
i woulda thought that checking the best before end dates on food was common sense! :monkies:
 
I remember my mom always talking about "worms" in pancake mixes.. that and raisin boxes... to be honest, i don't eat raisins out of those little boxes to this day because of that.....

its amazing how all those stupid little things stick with you...
 
"Mealy bugs", that's what my parents and grandparents used to say about old flour and pancake mix. Interesting thing is you are not likely to find mealy bugs in any sort of flour, they feed on live plants.
 
Mould spores are present in the air almost everywhere so also get into anything!

Interesting fact: mould can continue to grow at temperatures up to - 10° C.

As Stiz indicated, eating foods beyond their spoil date is just not smart. The fact is, in this country - no one ever has to take such chances.

One odd thing surprised me, though - I bought a plastic container of clay cat litter the other day and noticed a stamp on it that said "Best if used before 2011". . .

Er, . . why ??

If it was the scented or odour masking variety of cat litter it could be because the scent/masking agent may weaken over time.
 
Another story from my hillbilly youth:

Woke up one morning, went to the kitchen to grab some breakfast. Scoped out a big box of Raisin Bran on top of the fridge. Yeah, that would work. Grabbed a bowl, a spoon, snagged the cereal and the milk. Ate the first bowl and was starting on the second when my mom comes in from working in her flower beds. She sees that I am eating Raisin Bran and says "Don't eat that, it has worms in it." I look at her, look at the cereal box and ask "If there are worms in it, why wasn't it thrown away?" And mom replied that since she just bought the box of cereal the day before at the little country store a few miles up the road from our house, she was going to take it back for a refund.

I look at my cereal bowl, pick up my spoon and resume eating. Mom throws a fit about there being worms in the cereal....and I tell her, "I already ate one bowl, might was well finish this one too."

The expiration date the really confuses me: on bottle water. Why does water need an expiration date? I have never known water to spoil.

well i'm fine, guts of stainless steel *falls off chair comatose*, i'm sure i'll be fine, trust me after eating my mums cooking you could eat uranium and feel fine
