OT: Cell ban pending?

Holding a cell phone is banned here too; if they catch you you will get a €150 fine (200 USD). Quickly putting down the phone doesn't help much as most police vehicles have cameras on board, and if they are driving an unmarked vehicle they will probably see you before you will see them...

One way to make sure they don't call home after getting that ticket for using the cellphone while driving...... Police have the authority to smash it on the spot. That alone will cut talking on a cell phone and driving to almost nothing once word gets around it will really happen. :d

Same too with those text messaging thingies.

I read a note somewhere that an insurance company was getting supoenas for cellphone records of customers in an accident... if there was evidence that the cell was in use at the time of the accident they were refusing to pay the claim on the grounds that it constituted 'careless driving' ---THAT hits where it hurts.

That's one place I'd side with an insurance company.

I totally agree... ban cell phones of any type in a moving automobile. Ya wanna talk.. pull over and stop the dam car. But it'll be just like seatbelts.... some never take to it.

i disagree with this part. wearing your seatbelt in no way enhances your situational awareness, nor does it in any way affect the safety of others.
seatbelt laws are sold to the public on the dubious claim that those not wearing them are a drain on the pockets of others. that's a complete lie. if you are insured, and crash in a 64 1/2 mustang, (which had no seatbelts) your insurance pays. the rare case where someone languishes in a hospital for untold ages in a coma is affecting the insurance company, not the average joe. even then, it's a drop in the bucket compared to all the moola coming in through premiums. there is not one shred of credible evidence to show that seatbelt laws have done anything more than enhance law enforcement coffers. it's a thinly veiled tax and nothing more.

we now return to your regularly scheduled programming.
