"THE POWER OF WORDS"

At a time when our president and other politicians tend to apologize for our country's prior actions, here's a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our country.

These
are good

JFK'S
Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when
DeGaule decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaule said he wanted all US
military out of France as soon as possible.

Rusk
responded "does that include those who are buried
here?

DeGuale
did not respond.

When
in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the
Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of
empire building by George Bush.

He
answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of
its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom
beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for
in return is enough to bury those that did not
return.'

There
was a conference in France where a number of international engineers
were taking part, including French and American. During a break,
one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you
heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft
carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he
intended to do, bomb them?'

A
Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three
hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are
nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to
shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to
feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand
gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a
dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and
from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does
France have?'

A
U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included
Admirals from the U.S.. , English, Canadian, Australian and French
Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large
group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a
French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many
languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, 'Why is it that
we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than
speaking French?'

Without
hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's because the
Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't
have to speak German.'

AND
THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...

Robert
Whiting , an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At
French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his
carry on.

"You
have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked
sarcastically.

Mr.
Whiting admitted that he had been to France
previously.

"Then
you should know enough to have your passport ready."

The
American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show
it."

"Impossible.
Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France
!"

The
American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he
quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in
1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen
to show a passport to."

You
could have heard a pin drop.

If
you are proud to be an American, pass this on! If not, delete it.

am proud to be of this land, AMERICA

I did not know that it was question of politics on this site !
I have the politeness to write in English, I avoid offending
The errors of the others do not concern us.

Mike,
I know you meant no harm but the note is offensive to our friends and partners in other Nations.

I was watching a special on D-Day a few weeks ago and the French people including the children treated our visiting veterans with great dignity and respect, much more so than what many of our young people do here in the US.

Best regards,
Steve

Andre and our friends and partners in other Nations.

As you see I have learned from the History of the last hours.:wiggle:

Pity though that so many people in other countries tend to forget that the British Empire and its Commonwealth started World War Two. I say that because I'm very proud of that important fact. Unfortunately, we did not start WW1, although we were among the initial participants. We also fought in Korea, Vietnam, Borneo, Malaya, Dhofar, Oman, Aden, Kenya, Rhodesia, Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands, Iraq twice and Afghanistan. I have left out a multitude of other conflicts which are less well known to the general public, although no conflict is less important to the soldiers who are involved in it.

I'm not proud to be an American.

i uderstand being from canada to all take pride in the nato forces and in history some played more roles than others ...thats life

I think that of all those groups of people who were involved in the Second World War in the West, my greatest respect goes to those who joined the Free Forces - Czechs, Poles, Dutch, Belgians, French, Norwegians, Greeks, and many more, while the prospect of the War was still bleak and the outcome far from decided... I do not, for example, include those French who fought for Vichy until it dawned on them, and then switched sides. I mean the real ones from the early days, who really had to want to get to Britain to carry on the fight. They carried the notion of volunteering and duty to a point far beyond that to which most people in their position went.

You forgot all the Jew gassed by Churchill & his cronies.....

It's easy to be rude about other people, whether provoked or not - and whether the reply is witty or crude. Better to remember a useful principle - Toujours la politesse.

Fence Sitting

My mother's maiden name was Barber, and I'm related by that German lineage to General Erwin Rommel.

My surname is Des Chenes, French of course, and my paternal ancestors fought under Cardinal Richelieu...

I am a veteran of the first Gulf War, and also, a "proud American", residing in New York State.

I pray that someday there will be no borders, no discriminations, and no wars for anyone to remember.

WOW this sure has stirred up some folks hasn't it..
I am at a loss why??

To all our allies over there,
Not to worry, if anyone ever threatens again, you should always realize that American men and women again will be willing to suffer and die, to keep you safe.

Just like WW2 I believe the My Nation would be willing to save You All again..
And I also believe that, ther shall again be a day where you over there will again BEG for our help..
just like before..

Let us never forget that All Wars for whatever reason, always cost the Lives of many.
Perhaps I do pray we all learn at some point Not to ever allow these things to happen..
That perhaps at some point in Human History we do learn to get along..

I pray that someday there will be no borders, no discriminations, and no wars for anyone to remember.

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

You don't have to pray for that, it has already been declared by the almighty, just set back and wait for the triumphant return!

I have thought long and hard whether I should respond to this thread or not, but for once (or twice - I think I did it before), I will;

First of all, I feel that the post shouldn't have made at all at the CFS3 forum but at the appropriate one. Because this strikes me as a politically tinted post that has nothing to do with flight sims. Threads like these tend to do more harm than good to our interpersonal r tooelationships and that's not what I 'd like to see. Secondly, I am afraid that with my reply I will unintentionally step on toes too.

However, posts or email like this keep popping up now and then and like O-1 Driver remarked, they may be percieved as offending. I do feel somewhat offended but perhaps not in the way he thinks; other than being surprised by the the extravert manner 'Americans' (a crude generalization, I am aware) feel they should express their love for their country, it's the way they shout it from the rooftops that IMHO leaves very little room for other feelings or worse, criticism of their beloved nation. There is nothing wrong with their patriotism in itself but the offending part for me lies in the frequent (sublimal) message of posts like these which is that if you are American and critical of the US, you 're not a true patriot, and if you are non-American, you 'd better shut up because we liberated your country! All so eloquently condensed by Bush's immortal "If you're not with us, you 're against us"... But I am critical.

It makes me wonder why critical political discussions with Americans are so often ended with the 'WWII-card' being played: "If it wasn't for us, you 'd all be speaking German". Obviously, the US played a major part in the liberation of Europe (although they tend to forget the other nations involved) and I am very greatful for the sacrifices they made while fighting a totalitarian regime. But it was the generation of our grandparents and I don't see why this should be brought up time after time to defend present day politics or why this should keep me from being critical of them.

Now I really don't think at all that this was flyer01's intention and the US replies in the anecdotes were good but maybe it's also good to realise how others may take these. I also really do believe that one can be a patriot, greatful and what else while still being critical - better still, I think that it one's duty as a citizen/inhabitant of a country. It's one of the reasons why you should vote...

If my reply offended anyone, I apologize. It is not directed at anyone in particular, I just tried to express what these sort of anecdotes do to me.
