This is not a definite thing yet...but if all goes well with our tax returns and we get back what our tax preparer says we are getting back, I just might be able to persuade the wife to let me have the state return check to build a low-budget system. Just a nice solid quad core based system. Should be a definite step up from my single core P4 3.0gig system with 6 leaking MOBO capacitors.

Here's the MOBO/CPU combo that I am looking at.

Like I said, this will be an economy class build...will use the existing case from my long-in-the-tooth HP system, new RAM, new PSU, new video card. Will use my existing SATA hard drives (250gig and 500gig), IDE based DVD and CD drives and the media card reader/front USB/audio section. New cooling fans throughout of course.

I am shooting for the 500 to 700 dollar range on this build. Operating system will be Win XP Pro 32-bit. I have FSX, but not hugely pressed about being able to run it....just want a new system before mine gives up the ghost...and 4 3.4gig processors should have FS9 running like a banshee.

What do you gurus think of this MOBO/CPU combo as the basis for an econo-class build.

Okay, forget what I said.....wow, Texnetcop, that is one killer package. I love the case...looks like a WW2 fuel jerry/fuel can! 6 Cores! I will be able to run FSX and get to check out Wozza's new Texan! And FS9 will SCREAM!

Now all I have to do is convince the wife that I deserve to have a brand new computer. I haven't had a brand new computer since 1984.....got a Tandy Color Computer 2 from Radio Shack for Christmas that year....my very first computer and the only computer that I got new. All systems since have been second, third or fourth hand.

This is a combination package except for the video card and probably only good until the end of the month. If you can't do it by then and this one is no longer available let me know and I will get another winning combo for ya based on our test results at TechCorp. The AMD 1090T CPU is a must for a great AMD package so it stays.

May not be able to make this combo package....you know how it is when you are waiting for tax returns. They will be electronically filed on Monday....but once those returns are in the hands of the fed and state lackeys, who knows when we will see our money.

BUT...the wifey poo has given me the go ahead for building a new system. She knows that mine is on borrowed time and that I have been trying for the last 6 years to build a new system, but something has always come up to prevent doing so.

Just thought I would let you know that in light of the price drops occurring you can afford to go Intel instead of AMD and get more bang and upgrade ability for your $$$

Having been a long time fan of AMD, I'm quite happy to be in the Intel camp. From what I've heard, the AMD hex-cores are good for FSX, but AMD has a history of abandoning CPU platforms every two or three years, leaving AMD users with no upgrade path. Intel seems to pick a platform and stay with it for many years, so if I were building today I would again go with an Intel platform.
 
As soon as I have money in hand...which hopefully isn't too many days/weeks away....I will post here and ask for the best bang for the buck combo build....under $800. FSX is not a huge gotta have it thing....FS9 will remain my primary sim for many years to come as I have it loaded to the eyebrows with planes and more planes....most of which are not available for FSX.

Again, initially I will be running XP Pro, but will bring in Win 7 Ultimate at a later date...and will, if possible, have a dual boot system with a 250gig C drive with XP Pro, a 250gig D drive with Win 7, a 500gig E drive with my sim files, a 500gig or larger F drive. Will carry over my IDE DVD/CD drives from current system. That should tide me over for many years to come.

When you have a winning combo lined up, I am ready to order. Money is in the bank! Just ordered a new monitor...an Acer 19 inch non-wide screen Energy Star compliant LCD flat panel (will replace my 17 inch HP LCD panel). Win 7 will come later....so just need to build the tower. $800 max. Maybe a little extra...but trying to keep it close to $800, closer to $700 would be better but not critical.

Okay...my hands are shaking! I have never in my life spent more than $100 on something for myself. EVER! I just spent $827.97 and will spend more tomorrow. I might not survive this!

I ordered combo number 1 and video card number 2. After the $55 in mail-in rebates, that brings my total down to $752.97 for a new tower. Still WAY more than I am comfortable spending on myself.

Ordered a new ACER 19 inch non-wide screen monitor yesterday. $129.00

I just wish Win 7 Ultimate wasn't so bloody expensive!

Would the upgrade from VISTA to Win 7 Ultimate ($184) give the same results as buying the Win 7 Ultimate FULL package ($275)?

I just found ONE glaring problem....no IDE connector! I won't be able to use my existing IDE DVD and CD drives. So, I'll have to order a SATA DVD/CD drive. Oh well...it's just money.

Sorry Tim yes IDE and EIDE are from the past and the signal too slow but you can find a good SATA 2.0 DVD/RW for about $30.00
 
You can get SATA to IDE adaptors. I had to put one on my wife's IDE DVD burner as the single IDE slot on her mobo was being used for her hard drives. The only problem is that they cost almost as much as a new SATA burner anyway so you might be better off going that route.
 
Got an e-mail from Newegg...my parts are being packaged today and shipped today. The internal parts anyhow....no word on the case yet. But parts are on their way! Can't wait!

I took a better look at the case...and to my surprise I found that it has a SATA docking port on top of the case. Just shut the system down, slide a SATA drive into place, fire up and bingo bango the drive is connected. This is a great feature and one that I will use. The 1TB HD that came with the package will be used as my external storage HD....plug it in when I need to archive files, unplug it when I am done. Store the HD in a nice secure location for safety. Oh, I will still do a double archive to my 120gig external HD for redundancy's sake...but this will save me money not having to buy pricier external HDs. Just slap down $50 to $60 for a second SATA HD to use via the external docking port. I will pick up a second 500gig or larger HD to go into the system along with the 250 and 500 SATAs that I have now...but that will be a few months down the road.

Yep we fell in love with that case after spending some time with it. At first I thought it was a step down from the SCOUT but this case was loaded with neat features. By the way you got the last combo!

Yes, that is a nice case. I used the original (CM690) when I built my son's computer. I like it almost as much as my Stacker 810.
