PRB's Pacific Patrol II(a)

First leg started. AGGT - AGGA. Weather is stinko, with thunderstorms and low clouds. And turbulence. And the compass in this plane is off by about 15 degrees. Why do I get all the planes with the busted compasses?

Thanks Craig! Fun first flight. It was a very bumpy ride. I was tossed about mercilessly. Couldn't even open my bottle of Orange Crush, for fear it would spill all over the cockpit, and onto my pretty chart with the big red line on it. Had a bottle of Sake that I found in a case next to an abandoned Mitubishi A5M before I took off, but I'm saving that for later... Stayed around 3000 feet, so I could see where I was going, under the clouds. When I noticed the compass was off, I got a bit worried, but I could see the islands up ahead and was pretty sure I could find Auki. Have to see exactly how much it's off before the next flight and make up a gouge card...

Kodaks:

Passing Malaupaina Island, north of San Cristobal. I figured I was on the right track, more or less, when I passed over this one.

Somewhere between San Cristobal and Malaita.

Final approach, Auki airport.

Leg 2 (AGGA-AGGF) Weather today is no better than it was yesterday!

Made it to Maringe (AGGF) almost without incident. I think I figured what's wrong with my compass. We avionics techs used to call it "an electrical short between the rudder pedals and the headset" ... Need to investigate further (i.e., ****). Will report back...

Some kodaks of my flight to Buala (AGGF). The tiny island over yonder is called Ramos Island, part of the Santa Isabel province. With my compass still FUBAR, visual contact with this one, where it was supposed to be, was a welcomed sight. And a U-Toob of my landing there. Fun with FRAPS!

Heading up the north coast of Santa Isabel. See if I can find that airport at Rekata Bay (AGGV).

Found Rekata Bay (AGGV)! Wasn't too hard. Today's live action in-plane video is brought to you by Lucas Electronics. Quality aircraft instrument systems since 1894. But not compasses.

Munda! Looks like I lost the thunderstorms. Weather was nice over The Slot.

Headed for Ballale (AGGE) in the Shortlands group. Back to thunderstorms.

Live action shot of the flight from Munda to that airport next to Shortland Island (AGGM-AGGE). Trying to figure out how to make high quality videos that aren't six terra bytes in size. Using Fraps and AVS Video Editor. The latter has so dam many options it's discouraging. The cockpit of this plane always comes out looking like a black hole.

Making the run into Rabaul (MKO - AYTK). Have to get over the mountains of New Ireland, but they shouldn't be too high...
