RAF Pilot cleared of lying by CM.

Age 49, 30 years' service - joined the RAF at age 19. Seems rather elderly to be a flight lieutenant (just my observation, though). He must be an RAF version of what the US Navy calls a "Limited Duty Officer." That's someone who's risen through the ranks for a while and then becomes an officer. NC can probably correct me if I'm wrong, I was told they could advance only so far once they became officers. They brought a wealth of experience to the junior officer ranks. Easy to tell them out, the LDOs were the only bald JGs or LTs in the area, the rest of them were out of college maybe 2 or 3 years. Until you learned who the rather elderly junior officers were it did cause something of a start.

So, he's been cleared of lying to the court which removes any criminal element from this situation, and he's clean on that point. Now they'll just be reflecting on his judgment, apparently.

Had a buddy that went LDO and he said that he could go as far in rank as Captain.

In RAF its called specialist aircrew.
To opt out of having to do non-flying postings, necessary for career path officers.

Basically they revert to a lower rank in exchange for no postings or further promotion.
