Sad news...

Around 18,000 litres (reportedly 4,750 gallons) of Scotch poured into a local sewage works after the gaffe by staff at Chivas Brothers bottling plant.

An insider said: “It was like someone turned on a tap and it just ran straight down the plughole.” Fears that the booze ended up in the River Leven near the site in Dumbarton turned out to be off the mark.

But Scottish Water chiefs said the sheer volume of spirits could hamper its waste treatment centre in the town.

The bungle came during a routine cleaning operation in the early hours of Tuesday at the whisky plant which employs 600 workers. The insider went on: “It happened on a night-shift washout — that’s when the equipment is cleaned for a changeover between different products. Instead of draining the water and cleaning solution, they flushed out all the whisky. What’s even more shocking is no one noticed until 11am.”

He said bosses were “livid”, adding: “The guys responsible will be lucky to keep their jobs.” A spokesman for Chivas Brothers — makers of Ballantines, the world’s second biggest selling Scotch — said a probe is under way.

Deepest sympathy

:jawdrop: That's terrible news - :icon_eek: I can't express my sympathy sufficiently strongly. The waste, oh ! the waste.

Lottsa happy fish downstream - I wonder if anyone has pulled up any of Benny Hill's "forward-walking crabs" downstream as well.:icon_eek:

Ah the tragedy!

Then again, it was only Chivas...

now if my supply of certain single malts had been ignominiously flushed...

I need to head over to the (whiskey) cabinet located underneath the kitchen sink now and drown my sorrows.......

OH....this is a tragedy,I love a good shot of Chivas however, like srgalahad,I am a lover of single malts such as Glenlivet most!

How long until Jameson comes up with a tale about how John Jameson single-handedly vanquished The Keg Drainers of Aquila in their attempts to do the same to his favorite whiskey?

I bet that's going to be one sweet smelln sewage plant for a few days anyway. Such a God awful waste, so sad:toilet: just flushed away. Oh well I'll put my Scotch away and just stay with the Courvoisier for awhile.

FYI yer bunch of barbarians. The Scottish variety is spelt WHISKY. All the imposters are spelt WHISKEY.

Meanwhile here is a fun website to peruse in those bored minutes awaiting FSX to fire up.

I worked briefly on the site of Ballantines as an apprentice Civil Engineer, theodolite in hand I helped design their car park (big whoop). They had GEESE as guarddogs patrolling the grounds, this was 1973. Go anywhere near them they would raise all manner of hell, and viscious too.
Tightwads didn't give any free samples away either I seem to remember.

ARRRRGGGGHHHH! set condition ZEBRA through out the ship!

I have long held that the media overuses 'tragedy' for every run of the mill accident, and cited as an example that a ship load of single malt sinking is a tragedy. This is indeed a black day. Good thing I have laid in an emergency supply of laphroaig. And I'm armed, so back away!

tragedy??

what amazes me, all these post and replies and no mention of Laphroaig or the real Scotsmans grog, Bunnahabhain

Ahem. Post 12. Granny Maclean used to put the good stuff in me porridge when I was a wee sprog. Made me the man I am today. Loaded. I use Chivas for lock de-icer and bowl bog cleaner antway!

apology

Lazarus-- my apologies, like you I normally use Chivas for windshield washer fluid in the car. Now if you will excuse me, it's 5 o'clock somewhere and all this talk of scotch has worked me up a powerful thirst
