Surge protectors?

What is a good reliable brand of surge protector? I have a Radio Shack power strip that claims to be a surge protector also, but I've heard it's not a "true" surge protector.

I am in the habit of unplugging my 'puter when we are expecting strong storms, but I think my Thrustmaster Warthog joystick just went "bottoms up" by me doing this. Everytime I would unplug and then reboot, the joystick would crash and not be recognized without lots of uninstalling, reinstalling, and blood sweat and tears. Today, not even THAT would work, sooooooooo I just spent a whopping 35.00 :crybaby::icon_twi:to send the #*$%%& thing back to Canada for repairs/replacement. Damn I hated to send that thing back, it's sooooooooo smooth compared to my X52 Pro. :crybaby:

I don't wanna go thru that again, so I'm looking for better lightning/surge protection so I don't have to do any unplugging.

Darrell .......... Buy a good UPS of about 1k va. or better. It should cost about $100.00 or a little more but it will be worth it. This is a Battery Back up I'm talking about. I just had a lightening strike about 4 or 5 blocks away from my apartment that fried my TV Cable box, the computer was on and I was logged in to Comcast and it was fine. The TV was fine also. Just the Cable box.
The tv and cable box was on their own battery back up but the cable on that was not protected.
The cable for my computer was. You can plug a surge protector into the back of that to plug the moniter, printer, and the rest into that.
Can't go wrong with that.

I've had lightning go through a surge supressor and take out my computor. I don't trust the things and when it starts thundering around here close, I shut down and unplug now.

Another advantage of spending that money is the included software which in the event of total power loss will step in and use the battery power to do a normal OS shutdown.

Joe's right....

Buy an UPS. Just consider it a cost of the computer, and get on with your life.

I have two large ups that control two pooter, the TV, matter of fact everything in the upstairs office. They were around four hundred a piece. The battery back up last about 45 minutes with everything running. Yes we had a power surge and it knocked out everything. I never knew it till I went down stairs. When it hit nothing in the room even blinked or missed a beat. So yes I believe in a good UPS.
