The Ongoing Mystery Aircraft Thread Part Deux.

After considerable research, and with knowledge culled from years of aero-browsing, I can hazard a wee guess - is this American by any chance ????? :icon_lol:

Seems you scared everyone off with this biplane. Time to reveal and move along with something new. It looked like something from the USA about 1932 or so to me.

ahhhh.. the ugly, but often-seen Capelis XC-12 as modified by the Timm Aircraft Corporation for RKO, star of multiple movies:
- Five came back (RKO) 1939
- Flying blind (Paramount) 1941 (maquette)
- Flying tigers (Republic) 1942 (avion+maquette)
- The adventures of flying cadets (Universal) 1943 (maquette)
- Invisible agent (Universal) 1942
- Night plane from Chungking (Paramount) 1943
- Wings over the Pacific (Monogram) 1943 (maquette)
- Action in Arabia (RKO) 1944
- Dick Tracy’s dilemna (RKO) 1947
- Daredevils of the clouds (Republic) 1948 (maquette)
- Tarzan’s magic fountain (RKO) 1949 (maquette)
- China gate (Globe Enterprises) 1957 (maquette)

which also looked like this:

Shows the desperation of Hollywood :monkies:

Yes, and that Capelis has featured here before, Kevin. Suppose it is inevitable, really..... Lovely old piece of aeronautical junk !

I looked in my "wacky wing strut arrangement" folder and couldn't find it. :mixedsmi: Almost certainly German, but I'm not finding a match.
Am I correct in assuming that the rear turtledeck is missing from this specimen along with the fabric on the fuselage??

That looks like a Bolingbroke nose peeping out, so I reckon we're in a Canadian museum (no surprise there), but that's as far as I've got....

Ja, und ja, und ja (well, sort of...)
and Aye Lad!

and yes, the front is correct...

Well it looks like a Junkers J.4 but I can't find one in Canada !

One of the museums claims they have a J.1, but according to my records, that was a monoplane. ???

J1, J.1, J4 .. it all gets so confusing but you got it
:ernae: for lefty.
The story is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J.I
Note the pic down the page which is near where I took mine,
and here: http://www.geocities.com/hjunkers/ju_j4_a1.htm

The photos I used were taken last week in the Canadian Aviation Museum storage hangar so I know it's there :icon_lol:. Not a lot of material for this thread other than the J.1/J4 but a fascinating collection and esp. the storage facility ( which is almost as large as the main exhibit hall - over 100,000 sq ft). Once I get the pics all sorted I'll post a few and link to my Tinypic album. The Junkers is something though.. think 1915 Sturmovik! chrome-steel armour plating!!!

BTW, the 'official line' on the monoplane (J1) was that it was on display in a German museum until destroyed by bombing in WWII.

PS, the new Avatar pic is me, strapped into a Waco UPF-7 enjoying the Ottawa and Museum views from the air. Can't think of a better way to see a museum from the outside!

Like the avatar, Rob - just a wee touch of apprehension under the mask !

Never been in an open cockpit job myself - must be bracing.

Here's something that looks a wee bit Junkerish too...........

Moving along, here is something to enjoy over your late night pizza slice or early morning cup of joe (whichever the case).
