They were probably texting ...

The collisions probably occurred after the plane landed, not during the landing. You don't want to become an obstruction to traffic on a California freeway, people drive as fast as the traffic flow allows and you will get clobbered by somebody. The plane is obviously a write-off but it's a miracle nobody was killed.

it would seem to me that something like this should have been noticed ... but what do I know .... ?

once i was driving too fast on a wet road. the rain had just stopped and the sun came out. another car came out from a side street into the 4 lane, crossed 2 of them to get in front of me. i hit the brakes, spun out, and went up onto the curb except for one wheel of my 68 mustang.
there is absolutely nothing on this piece of straight, flat road for a mile in either direction. sun is shining on this easter sunday morning. i hitched a ride right away to a service station, and the same people gave me a ride back. after i arranged a tow. i bet i was gone no kiddin, maybe 15 minutes. by the time i got back, 3 other cars had hit mine. :isadizzy:

"I thought you fueled it up!"

"No... No no no no.. You said you were going to fuel it up!"

:kilroy:

Oh Bill, do you happen to know my cousin...? those were his exact words (or darn close I think) when he was interviewed after he put a 172 down in a backyard near Halifax in 1997... He was right seat helping a fellow get some hours for his rating, and this guy miscalculated the amount of fuel (or maybe the head wind, I am not sure) required for the return flight from Yarmouth NS, to Sherwater in Dartmouth, they ran dry at 3500 feet 20 miles from the airport... the pilot lost it and panic set in, my cousin kept his cool and slipped it down in a ladies back yard, he came in between 2 big trees, sheered the wings off and the 172 did a belly flop on the back lawn, they both walked away - shaken but not sturred... The Cessna didn't make it tho...

Later that spring my cousin brought another 172 from Halifax up to Saint John, and him and I took a quick hop out to an island in the Bay of Fundy. When I told my wife I was going to go she said "Are You NUTS", I told her not at all, let's face it if we get into trouble I have faith - Brian knows how to crash the safe way - he has experience... She just shook her head but she had no comeback... and it was an excellent flight.
