This take a lot of brains

Yep, the rescue took a lot of brains... getting into the situation in the first place took a lack of them. 6 people in an 18ft skiff in choppy weather is not too brilliant, esp if the driver doesn't pay close attention to the swells - and in shallow water even a 3 ft chop is bad as the period of the waves is short... Then, if the motor fails it's pretty often game-over and there's an expensive and unpleasant conclusion. How much are a few fish worth?

I sailed Vancouver to San Francisco in a 35ft sailboat in October (a few years ago) and had 45kt winds, seas to 30 ft near the end of a 5-day storm. We made it just fine out in the deep water but another boat that tried to run and hide in Oregon got broken in half when they got into the shallower water near shore. I won't sail my 18ft racing boat in anything much over 2ft chop after that even if it means disqualification.

Saw it on the news here earlier when they were starting the search. Sorry to hear 2 died. I didn't realise tho it was in Virginia, I caught it after they had given the location. To me it looked like the bridges heading out to Key West.

On one occasion when I was aboard the destroyer we had to stop in the channel off Lynnhaven Shores (near the Lesner Bridge) and put the motor whaleboat in the water to help some dummy in distress. He had run out of gas in a boat much smaller than the one in today's news story.

TB, What gets me is they were headed to the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel.....you know how bad that was today...if a fifty footer didn't go because of the conditions what the heck was that clown thinking.

Thats funny, Tarpsbird's post above says it was last edited by ME, 2 and a half years ago.....

That has to be one of the stupidest boat "captain" there has ever been:faint:

Well this morning they showed the boat. It was one of those Bass Tracker. It had 2 small seats in the back and one in the front. This kind of boat is more set up for fresh water fishing. I wonder where the other 3 guys were sitting.

everyone in the tri-state area knows the chesapeak is not your friend.
it can go from glass smooth to full on gilligan's island squall in a blink.
stripers are fun and all, but not worth risking your life over. or a sweet boat either.

How dumb can ya get? I'm surprised they didn't capsize alongside the pier.
