The owner of V8 Supercars' powerful Holden Racing Team, Tom Walkinshaw, has died after a long battle with cancer.

The former racing driver, Formula One team owner and boss of Walkinshaw Racing was 64.

After several years of success in Europe, Walkinshaw set up the powerful Holden factory team (HRT) in 1988 and also established the Benetton F1 team which Michael Schumacher drove for when winning his first world title in 1994.

The HRT team has gone on to win six V8 Supercars titles and notch six victories in the iconic Bathurst 1000 race. It's expected to sign this year's championship winner James Courtney for next season.

Aside from the HRT cars, Walkinshaw wass also the owner of V8 Supercars team Bundaberg Red Racing."
