using Ipads or samsung tablets as FMCs

jeansy

No longer active
one of my many shortfalls is IT networking, i mean fail terribly at IT and Im trying to link my galaxy or Ipad tablet with FMC software apps to use injunction with some of my addons to my pc tower

All the apps say you connect via a wifi network, this is where I become unstuck, I dont have wifi with my PC as I have a fiber optic cable connection to the internet, negating the need for a modem or router, My pc has its networking cable from the back of it then its connected to a port in the wall which is then connected to the fiber optic control box on the side of the house then into the virtual net world. In Australia they call this method NBN https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Broadband_Network everything on that page means nothing me, it could hold the cure to cancer or next weeks lotto numbers and I still wouldnt be able to understand and pick up on it

so im asking if any who uses these apps for flying is there a way to connect a tablet to your pc's network group just using the good old usb lead ?

Ive bought one of those wifi usb thumb drive gizmos however all it wants to do is connect to a Internet provider not a device, im in what you would call a modern house where everything and every room has its own port that is linked to fiber optic from the TV, to smart boxes, even my fridge is connected via fiber optic, my bloody garage even has a port where I can plug in a pc and get straight internet or phone

are there any programs or android or apple apps that allow you to join your home network using your usb lead, as when i plug my tablets in to the system they try and become a wifi modem and connect to the internet via my phone provider ( i think they call that hot spotting)

Any help or direction on this would be great, I know its not impossible as ive seen pictures sim pit builders on the net using such tablets in their home cockpits, and honestly i dont like the idea to fork out several hundred dollars to buy a 3rd party FMC hardware as I jump from boeing and airbus regularly

if this makes sense to anyone and have a way head I would love and appreciate your guidance on resolving this

Matt, your question is a good one as Wi-Fi connectivity can be really complex. I have linked several of my tablet apps to a desktop in the past. The way I did it and the only way I think it can be done with Wi-Fi connectivity is to have a mother board that has Wi-Fi built in. There will be several aerials that plug into the back of the unit. This will allow direct Wi-Fi connectivity to your apps seeking a Wi-Fi connection. Once I built my current computer my new motherboard didn't have this feature. No more tablet app connectivity. Hope this makes sense. I am sure there are those here with more experience that can verify and or elaborate. Txnetcop will know the answer to this question in more detail.

so in layman's terms i should look at investing in a wifi card I could insert onto my MB if my MB doesnt have something like that fitted? which it doesn't as there are no antenna looking bases on the back

damn I only just got a new pc built less than 6mths ago, tomorrows project looks like i need some screwdrivers , my hammer and **** load of gaffa tape and its a great excuse to knock off at lunch tomorrow for a "doctors appointment" that will go for a few hours

Hi Matt,
I was looking at this myself, and this article is current as of March and offers a few options.
https://www.lifewire.com/connect-ipad-to-wired-ethernet-port-1994242

...fiber to the premises, what a nice thought.

Thanks for the input however

again to many tech phrases there and im already lost, so would i have to go from the wall to the box to the PC?, I tried one of those things a while back it reduced my speed significantly or is it a stand alone that plugs into a usb

we really need to be using crayons and craft paper in order for me to understand this stuff

I do most of my painting on my flight computer which doesn't have wifi capability. But for when I'm away from it overnight or so, I carry my trusty ol' Sony laptop (Win 7) which has all of my paint programs on it as well. I use a portable usb hard drive to transfer files between the two. Simple, effective and no need worry with wifi other than when I go to surf the net on the laptop. And as old as the laptop is, it's still fine for painting. And when Mrs Willy is back in the hospital, I'm not sitting around bored out of my mind while she's sleeping.

you may not actually need wifi on the desktop computer itself, as long as you have a wifi router somewhere on your home network. For the longest time I ran with a cable modem attached to a wifi-router and my desktop wired to that router. My desktop did not need to deal with wifi to get to the interweb but I could still communicate with all the wifi devices we had.

Jeansy said in the first post he doesn't have a Wi-Fi router. :)

Jeansy, all you need is a USB Wi-Fi adapter for your PC. In the US, these these can be found for under $20: http://amzn.to/2uRDiP8

Get 802.11ac as the price is only a few dollars more and the connection to the newest tablets will be faster and more solid, which matters for something real-time like flight simming.

Then you have a couple of options: (1) Just set up a local network used by your computer and your tablet, so you can connect your apps, or (2) use the Windows "Internet Connection Sharing" feature to also share your Internet connection on the tablet. (Which will make the tablet a lot more useful for non-sim stuff.)

The only way I can think of to use USB (which isn't designed for networking on modern tablets because Wi-Fi is everywhere except for your house :) would to to use an iPad with Duet Display to turn it into a second monitor. It will act just like you've plugged in a second display on your PC and you can drag flight sim windows or third-party apps onto it. Duet Display is the only one of these apps that I've used that's fast enough for gaming. But this would be for using Windows FMCs, not mobile apps, so I imagine any touch functionality would be quirky.

If it was me, I'd go for the USB Wi-Fi adapter on your PC. If necessary, offer to buy a nerdy buddy a round of beers to help get the local network up and running. :)

Thanks Tom, BP, Denny

I bought one of these today as the " in store guru" assured it would work, so I will have a go with this

living this place is nice with all the new hi tech gizmos installed however it can be a nightmare trying to get things like this working

thanks for the input to the other guys, however

as my original post and title Im trying to connect a tablet to the tower PC in order to have a fmc app run on the tablet next to me while flying tubes

I dont need wifi, as the house has inbulit wi-fi into the ceiling in each room and I dont need a router as they bottle neck, this house is plug and play regarding internet access and I dont need to transfer paints from a laptop to the tower, ( i normally spend any where up 300 days a yr away from home normally in a middle of an ocean somewhere, thats where I do most of my repainting)

I was trying to find a way to get a tablet to direct network with my tower via wifi without it trying to connected to internet as an access point and override my current network settings cutting my current internet access off

Hi Matt,
Man that is frustrating
if you want to connect your tablet to the internet in your house, what do you do?

Hi Matt,
Man that is frustrating
if you want to connect your tablet to the internet in your house, what do you do?

if i want to connect to the house i just select the house in wifi and it connects no problems, same with any wifi device like phones etc tvs and other things like that. which has wifi or not, i can just simply plug into the wall and i have a net connection, its like that in every room( even the bathrooms minus the wall sockets ) basically the house is a huge wifi router hub

im trying to get the tablet to connect to pc tower via wifi using the usb wifi attachment

each time i start the usb wifi it connects to the wifi in the roof of the house and the tablet ignores the tower and continues to connect to house

I need to find a way for the usb wifi on the tower to ignore the internet and simulate a being just a ethernet socket and get the tablet to simulate it connecting to the pc in a lan configuration and ignore the internet all other wifis

im thinking i need to try this away from the house, because I cant turn off the net as it has a 12hr battery back up built into the system and the junction box that joins the house to the network is underground with a locked man hole cover down the street and the one on the side of the house requires a special key, that i dont have only the maintainers of the system have

The widget you bought is doing what it is designed to do- connect to the existing wi-fi network. If the computer and the I Pad are both connected to that same in the ceiling wi-fi network, they should talk to each other.
I use Remote Flight Server for my touch screen radio app on my I Pad, I also have a moving map and a gauge app. See here- https://remoteflight.net/
They both just connect through my house network; along with 2 other computers, 2 Roku, and an X Box 360.

Cheers for the reply Sue, Ive given up on the using the tablet as a FMC for now, I think it will be more cost effiectve if I just walk away from it and try another time with some local who an idea

I was about an inch away from throwing the lot over the back fence, however sitting on the back porch with the air rifle popping cane toads calmed things, im just going to find something else tonight to get my blood pressure up

Matt, have you created a home network ? If not, there is only the ceiling wi-fi for the tablet to see. Control Panel-Network and sharing- Set up a new connection or network. Then tell the tablet to connect to the home network.
Sue
