YouTube disenchantment

Yes, I tried a couple which are still bleached out but not too much. The third attempt hasn't worked, I'll post it now so you can see what's happening.

The jxr format has different color handling and a higher (and lossless) compression ratio than other formats, the technical details are all given here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_XR
I've found that converting jxr to any other format loses image & color data which is out of range of the other format.
Ok, I got that. But when displaying a jxr and then taking a classic screenshot and pasting that in your painting program shouldn't make a difference. There will be quality loss, but not colour.

The clouds in my third screenshot are almost totally bleached out, they don't look like that in the original jxr screenshot. Both colour and detail have been lost.

Any chance of uploading one of the problem .jxr files? I've got a hunch that may be able to help but need an image to test first.

What I see in the screenshot thread looks much better than the attachment. The clouds are just a white blur in the .jxr. I see details in the jpeg.

Thanks Don, that's interesting - maybe the jpegs only look washed out on my system because it's set up for HDR? If you open the jxr image with MS Photos, it should appear correctly.

Thank you very much - I had to zip the jxr image, attached below:
That's odd; the color depth is reported as being 64bit and not the 128bit I was expecting. It must be a slightly modified HDR profile that MS/Xbox are using.

I was hoping that a quick conversion using tone mapping/color profile changes (and other gubbins) would work but my hunch didn't play out.

There is a huge amount of color information loss when converted to a more standard image format, either 8bit or 16bit PNG or, a slightly less common format which retains more detail (but not much more), TIF. It can be slightly mitigated if you import the .jxr using paint.net (one of the few programs that directly support the .jxr format) and then adjusting the highlights and shadows. This needs to be done on a 'per-image' basis as there will be no 'correct' setting. With your sample image I managed a reasonable result by changing the highlights by -70, the shadows by +40 and the radius to 3. Now, those are the settings that worked for me on my monitor, everyone else will get slightly varied results depending on whether their equipment supports HDR or not.

So, after all that waffle, here's the conclusion. JXR sucks for screenshots! The only solutions are that if you want to post screenshots then disable the HDR option in MSFS (not ideal) or, if you have an Nvidia GPU, use GeForce Experience to capture screenshots in SDR (PNG).

I tried but this one has beaten me!

As it has with me and everyone else on the internet too! That's why I asked if jxr format could be added to the 'recognised' or 'allowed' formats list for SOH forums.
Tiger,

You might want to consider the fact that we do not have limitless storage. I understand that jxr is rather big.

Don't know if it's my monitor, my HDMI cable or what, but I don't support HDR. My system uses MS Photo as default, sooo...

It seems MS Photo is the only program that will open it that I can find for free in Win 11. Strange.

Maybe I am lucky, I have had very little trouble with 2024...that is since the massive SU2 update. Things have been going so well (knock on wood) that I deleted 2020 last week. Like Don, to me 2024 visually is head and shoulders above 2020. Now, I only use Free Flight. So, if there are issues with other parts of 2024, I am not aware.

I prefer written text over videos. I am not much of a YouTube or TV watcher. On somethings I have to watch a YouTube vid because it isn't in a written form. On those occasions, I use a downloader program that strips the ads and saves the video to my computer where I can peruse it at my leisure.

Like Collensr, I value SOH. It is the one flight sim forum I visit daily. However, I sense a drop in member participation that concerns me. Maybe it is just the issues with MSFS, but I remember when it was far more vibrant.
I definitely look at SOH every day just to try and stay current. However, personally my sim time does tend to drop off in the summer months and particularly this year when we are having such good weather in the UK and I'm out with the camera hitting the airbases and Air shows.

So I think this forum (2020) and SOH generally does a great job in terms of being informative, educational and enjoyable. Yes we all get steamed up from time to time and folk have differing views on stuff. However, I cannot think of a time when I've raised a query or problem and haven't had a quick and helpful response. This is unlike other "places" where one is more likely to meet with intolerance or abuse.
