Attention all DC-3 fans !

Atm the radio set is placed at the bottom of the Captains panel (easy accessable because of the removable Yoke) but an option is also to remove the Sperry AP temporarely and place the set there. Suggestions welcome.

Could placing the set in the Sperry area be done easily? If so perhaps when the Sperry is done later, a simple option for preference of equipment during installation can be made, or a section of the panel.cfg could be copy & pasted to switch out the Sperry for modern equipment as desired.

Either location is fine with me, though I like Alky's idea for future .cfg options. I don't actually anticipate using the autopilot much if at all, so I'm not bothered by the lack of it, though I understand that others' mileage may vary.

No problem either with more modern radios - a similar effect to what PMDG seems to be doing with their DC-6. Happy to fly a well-worn AC with a variety of equipment stuck in it.

Looking forward, as always.

Thanks for the input, gents.

Could placing the set in the Sperry area be done easily?

Sure, no problem:

With a bit of luck swapping it out with the Sperry will also be possible. ADF and Transponder radios can be placed at the right of nav/com radios.

Have to say though, personally i already miss that intriguing Sperry AP instrument, even if it doesn't work just yet... :)

Remember, that small red placard at the left says : Hide/Unhide Yoke... Thus:

As long as the Sperry AP will be inop a simple AP will be provided via the switch at the lower left side of the mid pedestal. In the movie 'Dakota' one can see Kees Brusse use this particular switch too to turn the AP on and off so it's kind of authentic. It will hold present heading and altitude.

cheers,
jan

One can always return to the build .. takes the must I .. have to do it out off the equation , currently as it is .. its 100 fold over the default :very_drunk:

Well I have to admit it looks best with the radios at the bottom of the captain's panel and the Sperry where it belongs, even INOP. I like the idea of the AP switch for holding straight and level. :)

I concur, the idea of implementing the Sperry with rudimentary functions for the time being sounds good. It belongs there and looks just great!

Awesome artwork!

Cheers,
Mark

The VC clearly looks the best with the old Sperry.
but to me funcionality is important. so if I add a pop up autopilot like a Sperry 50 it would be nice if it worked? (or better an old sperry like this one if I can find one) I would miss the pitch and heading control.

I would suggest keeping the cockpit looking original and using a close-as-possible pop-up radio/AP replacement in the meantime while the coding can be done for the original plan. Thank you Jan for your masterful artwork and the outstanding effort you are putting into this project.

Please don't take this the wrong way because I don't want to seem picky, believe me; but I just tumbled to the fact that the current panel seems to have an ils/vor in it (Right on top of things...). When would that have happened in the real world?
I was initially under the impression that this was meant to be a vintage (1940's) cockpit and am puzzled by the addition of the more modern nav aids.

I don't want to seem not picky enough, :a1310: but this looks simply amazing as is!! I too like the Sperry, inop though it may have to be. I fly the Dak all the time and so look forward to this incredible leap in realism. Thanks for all the hard and fantastic work.

Having the Sperry in it's place just adds to the authenticity (wow, did I spell that right?). It is part of the charisma of this beautiful old lady.

And I am sure there are plenty of pilots out there that experienced an inop Spery on their flight.

And to accommodate the mass instead of the few, the suggestion of optional selection of the nav/com radios where the Sperry is located, or even better, a pop-up, sounds a good idea for when the coding of the Sperry is done.

Jan, an amazing job on the VVC so far, and I am so pleased to hear that you have not given up on the vintage navigational aids.

Thanks to Wozza for helping out on the coding, bringing this wonderful project back in motion.

If one of those super-old Sperry APs were in a cockpit today, it almost certainly would no longer work right. So maybe non-functionality could be considered to be a realistic, special feature...:indecisiveness:

(The cockpit is looking absolutely awesome!)

I'm happy to have it either way. I'm very grateful for all the work put into this project.

In the RW though, one of the first things you'd change on an old bird are the radios, especially with the new modern freq allocation. These beauties were draft horses not show ponies, an owner would do anything to prevent AOG and keep them in the air earning their keep.

If you leave the Sperry in place for texture and history, then it would look cool to have a crack in the glass and a Dymo label with an "InOp" legend placed on the face.

Love the idea of "INOP" on a Dymo label, or just scrawled on a piece of tape. A2A does something similar in their Comanche when you opt out of certain features (for example, on the fuel tank selector when you don't use the wing tanks). Same approach here would look right at home.
