There is defiantly a difference in the J-79 sounds of an F-104 verse an F-4, plus the F-4 has two those beasts. The F-104 has more of a howl and the F-4 is more of a screech. Check youtube videos of both aircraft and you can hear the difference. Nigels and Cloud 9 soundsets are very good and fit the F-4. None of them are FSX designed as no stereo cones.
What is needed is a true FSX HD soundset. Milviz F-4 will be the one to watch and can't wait to see if they got the sound right.
You want loud... I've posted the video in another thread, but here you go anyways. I like to tinker with effects and sounds.
I agree with you almost 95.5%. I know that the F-4 has two J79's, was assigned to a Navy F-4 outfit and I did see two J79's on each aircraft.

I don't know about the howl or the screech. Perhaps they are one and the same, Using this medium of typing rather then live talk it is hard to debate.
But be that as it may, the only descriptive word I can call that sound emanating from a F4 was howl. I agree that eventually, and with all the recent interest
in the Phantom, that someone will get the sounds correct. It's good to tinker and twiddle to try to "optimize" the sounds. Guess it is like seasoning for the ears.

I do remember when the NAVY F-4s would make their approach for a carrier trap that their approach speed would be almost at a stall and I remember what sounded like a "howl" when they were at approach speed. I would be in vultures row and watch them catch the wires.
Good luck in your endeavors.
